Brigade is a unique social enterprise restaurant and bar, housed in the historic Fire Station on Tooley Street, London. It is one of the oldest fire stations in the capital, built after the Tooley Street fire in 1861 ravaged the entire area.
Firstly, Brigade is a British inspired Bar and Bistro serving delicious, seasonal and sustainably sourced dishes, prepared using the finest organic produce. Secondly, it is a training kitchen, providing apprenticeships that help the homeless develop skills and motivation to find employment. It is this huge ambition to help and inspire London’s most vulnerable people that lies at the heart of Brigade’s unique business plan. Each of the twenty apprenticeships awarded annually by Brigade count towards a NVQ Level 2 diploma in professional cooking.
Brigade Bar is fun, informal and focused on good food and drink. It’s the perfect place for an evening with friends, or to entertain clients over lunch. Brigade Bar’s menu offers everything from small nibbles such as nutty, buttery Sicilian olives from one of the finest producers in Italy, the quintessentially British ale and mustard Scotch egg, and classic pork scratchings, infused with apple and cardamom.
For something more substantial, the hard-working and passionate team behind Brigade showcase a simple, thoughtful Brigade Classics menu, the highlight of which has to be the oxtail burger, served in a fluffy buttermilk bun with spiced tomato chutney. Round your leisurely meal in Brigade Bar off with a cheeseboard served with quince and grapes, or opt for one of the ever-rotation seasonal desserts.
Despite the building itself being a landmark steeped in history, the Brigade’s principles on sustainability, social enterprise and of course dining are rooted firmly in the 21st century.
