50% off at Zengi

One of London's best-kept secrets, Zengi is a cosy, family-run hideaway nestled between the city and Spitalfields, deep in the heart of Shoreditch.

Drawing inspiration from the Turkish dynasty that ruled parts of northern Iraq, eastern Turkey and Syria in the twelfth century, Zengi's menu is a carefully-curated journey across the Middle East and the Mediterranean, bringing together the best dishes from each region.

The chefs have created an enticing offer of mezze, mixed grills and classic 'soul' dishes, blending traditional family recipes with more adventurous, contemporary flavours. An eclectic mix of Ottoman art and the family's personal effects adorn the space, mirroring the diverse menu.

The restaurant is split across two floors, leading from street level with open-plan kitchen and buzzy atmosphere, down to the sunken 'den' with private booths in softly-lit alcoves; perfect for a quick bite at lunchtime or an intimate dinner with friends. Outdoor seating means guests can enjoy shisha all year round and during the summer months, guests can dine al fresco.

Visited Zengi last week with my mum as we wanted to be close to Liverpool Street Station.

We had two hot starters, falafel and one of the restaurant's speciality Kibbehs (with minced lamb).

The starters would have benefited with a bit more sauce or salad but still we shouldn't fault them when we're enjoying 2-for-1.

The main courses came in generous portions and were nicely presented.

We had "Shish Alinazik" (lamb shish with smoked aubergine & yoghurt) and lamb tagine.

The bill came to about £23 including everything, which is really good value, considering the quality of the food, portion sizes, service, ambience and the convenient location of the restaurant.

Can't be too greedy sometimes! The tastecard use was very easy too (no problem at booking or when paying).

I recommend this place if you want a good-value cosy dinner in the area. "

We had a really enjoyable evening especially with the tastecard. Starters are around £4 and most mains under £11, so with 241 the prices could not be beaten though of course the food is more important than the price.
The food is good and seemed authentic. We had a starter of Heleb Kibbeh, a dish from Baghdad of fried rice and saffron shell filled with spiced mincemeat and grilled Halumi, followed by a special of three different shish and also a whole grilled fish, these were the two most expensive items on the menu.
The service was fast, friendly and efficient.
Well worth a visit and the bill was under £30 for two and this included a bottle of wine. "
