We decided to go to the Carnaby Restaurant after a show in the West End.
At first sight it looked very good, with a comprehensive menu and a very comfortable restaurant. We did wonder why it was virtually empty when all around, restaurants were full. We were soon to find out.
The menu looked interesting and we chose a starter platter to share. After some time it came, and although not plentiful, looked good. However, there was no bread served, and when we asked the waiter he mumbled that he would get some. After our drinks order we also asked for some water. This came in a bottle but to our astonishment with no ice and the water was warm. The same waiter was told and took the glasses away and then return with them with ice in and the original warm water.
Clearly this wasn't going well, but worse was to come.
I ordered Roast beef with Yorkshire pudding. I expected fairly thin slices of rare roast beef, but what I got were four thick 'lumps' of beef which looked as though they had been reheated together with what clearly looked like a frozen Yorkshire. This was so far from succulent meat as to make their claim laughable I am afraid.
My wife ordered Salmon pave with chips. The salmon was OK, if a little dry and the chips were good. She asked for vinegar and our waiter proceeded to bring it in a bowl with a tea spoon.
All very disappointing, but we decided to have a desert of fresh fruit with a scoop of sorbet. A very sorry looking bowl of soft fruit was produced with no sorbet. Our waiter was once again asked, mumbled something and some 10 minutes later appeared with some sorbet.
As you can imagine all this took some considerable time and we were relieved to leave extremely dissatisfied.
This hotel is in a wonderful building just opposite Carnaby Street. It is astonishing that such a prestige hotel group can get things so wrong when they have clearly spent a great deal on wonderful décor.
Even with the tastecard discounts this meal was so poor, and the service so bad and amateur, and cost far more than it was worth.
