Having booked a table, we expected to be seated on arrival. We waited 5 minutes before we were even acknowledged by a staff member and that included walking over to the bar to ask one of the 4 members of staff behind (one just polishing glasses) who just ignored us.
Eventually a flustered waiter came to seat us and apologised for the wait. The table was fine, possibly slightly too close to the table next to us which is sometimes a bit off putting but not worth mentioning at the time.
The waiter offered us drinks and left us to look at the menu. He then returned to ask if we minded the TV being put on next to our table so some customers could stand and watch the game! At this point I did feel in a bit of an awkward position - I would rather not be surrounded by people watching football whilst trying to have my dinner - it was a very small seating area with barely any room to stand around. It certainly would have been uncomfortable. Luckily when I seemed hesitant the waiter quickly shuffled off and said don't worry it's not a problem.
We ordered our food, 2 steaks, rare and medium rare, 2 sauces and onion rings. We waited around 45 minutes for the food. The waiter was clearly rushed off his feet and didn't seem to be supported by any other member of staff at this stage.
The steaks arrived in a wooden board on paper. Now, I get the whole Gastro pub thing but surely a steak that cost £17 deserves a plate? My rare steak oozing with juice topped with my Diane sauce was more than difficult to eat. I can only say I hope the paper was edible as every mouthful of steak contained this. The gratin potatoes I had with my steak were borderline impossible to cut through where they were so crisp at the bottom.
On top of this when the food came we were missing our onion rings and were not given steak knives. After waiting a couple of minutes I had to go and ask another member of staff. She bought over the steak knives and said 'the onion rings are on the way, they will be about 5 minutes.' - obviously they were completely forgotten about.
When they finally did arrive I had finished my meal. I asked the waiter to remove them from the bill as I no longer required them. Which he did without fuss. Only toward the end of our meal did the waiter start to get support from other staff. The 6 tables in our small area were all calling for attention and I could see more unhappy faces around.
The only saving grace for this outing for me was the fact that I could use my taste card and have 50% off my bill. I certainly would not have paid £40 for this experience.
Considering the location of racks and it's good reputation I expected a lot more than this.
I left hungry and annoyed and I definitely will not be recommending or returning.
