The Rose & Crown is believed to have been built as an ale house in 1810 by Edward Knight the brother of Jane Austen. Edward was Jane Austen’s third eldest brother, as a boy he was adopted by the Knight family who were wealthy relatives of the Austen family. He took their name and went on to inherit the estates of Chawton, Steventon in Hampshire and Godmersham Park in Kent.
At The Rose & Crown they are passionate about providing fresh, tasty, wholesome food which they are proud to serve our customers. Where our produce comes from is equally important to us and they ensure they use as much local and seasonal produce as possible.
When you come and visit them please read the boards up in the pub which details where your meal that day has come from. Ensuring their food is of the highest standard and also supporting local farmers and butchers is really important to them.
Their dessert menu changes on a daily basis as the desserts are made fresh so please check the daily dessert board in the pub.
