Superbly located opposite Clifford’s Tower, just a short walk from York train station and all of the city’s major historical attractions, 29 States Indian Kitchen brings a unique, modern brand of Indian cuisine to the city.

The concept behind the stylishly furnished restaurant is to bring a taste of authentic cuisine from each of the twenty-nine states of India, to the plates of its lucky guests. The passionate head chef Jagwant Mehra is a celebrity chef in India, famous for his use of traditional and historical Indian cooking techniques. Despite this, his meticulous eye for detail, emphasis on beautiful presentation firmly cements his unique creations in the 21st century.

You’re bound to find something to satisfy your taste buds at 29 States: whether it’s the Kashmiri Lamb Rogan Josh, the Keema Mutter, a minced meat curry cooked with peas, potatoes, ginger, garlic and spices, originating from Hyderbad, or the tasty lentil dal, straight out of a Punjabi dhaba. Seafood lovers will delight in the grilled seabass with fenugreek leaves, turmeric and cardamom from Rajastan, and the fresh, aromatic Goan king prawn curry. All of these dishes are prepared to order, using organic, locally sourced produce.

Jagwant and his team have also worked hard to incorporate some very refined British elements into their menu. This fusion of traditional Indian cooking with contemporary British favourites shines through most of all in the perfectly seared scallops, infused with saffron and curry powder, served with Makhani sauce and a tamarind vinaigrette.

29 States’ dessert menu features plenty of traditional treats from the subcontinent, such as the explosively sweet and satisfying gulab jamuns and creamy iced kulfi, alongside Western favourites such as Belgian chocolate cake served with vanilla ice cream. If you’re too full for one of their desserts, why not sample one of 29 States' signature cocktails, infused with distinctly Indian flavours?

Whether you're enjoying a long lunch with friends whilst exploring all that York has to offer, or an intimate date, you're bound to find your experience at 29 States an exquisite and memorable one. The ambience of the restaurant, and the service from the passionate and welcoming staff are both every bit as remarkable as the food served.

Menu had a large range of starters but not so many mains. Service was good. Chicken balti i had was different to what i'm used to but very nice- although it was quite greasy. Girlfriend had chicken tikka massala which tasted good, but she prefers a sweeter, milder curry. Garlic Naan came out very fresh and tasty, pilau rice was tasty - portion sizes of these were large. Found the drinks were expensive £4.95 for 175ml of wine and £4.25 for Cobra pint, but to be expected. Overall good- we found that perhaps we ordered too much thinking we'd save with the taste card i think! Left a fair bit of rice and curry over. "

Really very good Indian meal, very fresh food, clearly made with care and presented very well. Nothing was too heavy or stodgy, but we were still left incredibly full after two courses! The staff obviously care about their food and the waiting staff were passionate about and knowledgeable about their product. We will definitely be returning! "
