Situated close to London Victoria, Café Portugal is a popular destination for tourists, especially the Portuguese looking for a taste of home. This unassuming little eatery is also a superb destination for those wanting to sample the authentic dishes of Portugal without having to jump on a plane, offering a wide choice of classic Portuguese dishes, all made fresh on the premises.
Just a hop, skip and jump from London’s bustling Victoria train and coach stations and close to the banks of the River Thames where stunning views and riverside walks are enjoyed, Café Portugal does exactly what it says on the tin.
Fish is big on the Café Portugal menu and rightly so as Portuguese cuisine is renowned for its fabulous seafood dishes. Choose from a variety of fish including trout, salmon and sea bass, all cooked to perfection and in the simplest way. The salt cod is a star dish at Café Portugal, served with potatoes, onions and chunks of hard-boiled egg, while the clams are a classic dish of the house.
The meat-based dishes are superb too with the pork cooked with clams, chorizo, pickled vegetables and fried potato cubes as a standout dish. Chicken Peri Peri is another winning recipe, the classic Portuguese spicy chicken dish that seems to have really taken off in the UK.
Café Portugal’s signage in the colours of the Portuguese flag is hard to miss and there are a few tables and chairs to the front offering al fresco dining. Inside the café the décor is simple and clean with colourful images of Portuguese food adorning the walls.
