Found on Front Street in the picturesque Durham Village of Witton Gilbert, The Travellers Rest is the place to be for those looking to escape their everyday trials and tribulations. The wonderful old fashioned British pub provides patrons with a warm and welcoming atmosphere that comes through a combination of sublime service standards and a dining room that is complete with a log burner and a bare-brick wall that is adorned with a deer’s head. This is more than matched by a glorious food menu that is as extensive as it is diverse, with dishes that are created fresh and to order using only the best in locally sourced ingredients.
There are a range of exquisite starters on show that offer the perfect base from which begin the fine dining experience. These include, but are certainly not limited to, the glorious homemade chicken pate and the sweet and crispy crab cake; whilst for those that like to share, the oven-baked nachos are a superb option.
To follow, there are a fantastic selection of main courses that will have any diner scratching their head in wonderment as to which sublime dish to go for. From an old favourites list that contains a hearty pot roast belly pork and a tasty chicken tikka massala, to their assortment of homemade pies and sea food courses – where the traditional fish and chips certainly feature – the variety is there for all to see. As for those that are averse to all things meat, the caramelised onion and goats cheese tart and the sizzling vegetable stir fry provide terrific and no less delectable alternatives. The specials are refreshed weekly too, so there is always that air of mystery!
Round the meal off in style by choosing a Traveller's Rest dessert that is sure to satisfy each and every sweet tooth. Where the homemade and heart-warming hot chocolate fudge brownie is delightfully contrasted by a sweet and fruity Eton mess in a gratifying collection of treats.
