Anywhere named the Shamrock Restaurant would immediately be thought of as an Irish eatery; however this is most certainly not the case with the unique Shamrock Restaurant in central Birmingham.
Located in the city centre, the Shamrock Restaurant is a lovely little restaurant that serves authentic food from East Africa and Eritrea. Although unusually named to say the least, this great east African dining room is a popular place to dine amongst Birmingham’s African community, offering many a true taste of home, while at the same time it provides everyone else with a totally unique dining proposition.
Unbeknownst to many western palettes, the food from the east of Africa and Eritrea is filled with spice and intense flavours. The Timitimo rolls are a starter well worth trying, made from lentils, rolled enjera and a hot zigni sauce – a traditional spicy sauce from Eritrea.
Main courses include an east African chicken casserole cooked with the zigni sauce and served with rice as well as tender fried lamb cubes cooked in a clay pot with spiced butter, rosemary and green chillies. Try the Shamrock special, a spicy beef dish with peppers, onions and green chillies while fish lovers should sample the zigni fish stew.
There are plenty of vegetarian options to choose from too such as the spinach with homemade cheese and spiced butter or the east Africa hummus with garlic and chilli.
The Shamrock Restaurant dining room is an authentic African space with plenty of original features including the bamboo mat covered bar. The staff are really welcoming and love to show off their wonderful food to those who have never tried it before.
