Set in the heart of the Lake District, just a 20 minute walk from Grasmere village, the alluring Lancrigg Hotel nestles quietly within Ambleside's rolling hills. This serene hideaway was used as a farmhouse before the great poet William Wordsworth, in the height of his love affair with the Lakes, bought and renovated it in 1840.
Having now served as a hotel for three decades, Lancrigg House sets itself apart from others in the Lake District with its dedication to serving 100% vegetarian food in the Lancrigg Restaurant.. They source organic produce from local suppliers and practice cooking styles that preserve goodness and vitality. The result is thoroughly ‘real’ meals that arrive straight from the earth and onto your plate free of additives, preservatives or colouring.
Vegetarians, vegans and those sensitive to gluten will of course be in their element at this hotel; however even the most dedicated carnivores are encouraged to give Lancrigg's offering a try. The vibrant menu changes regularly depending on the produce available, but diners can expect to detox with anything from chargrilled vegetables and goat’s cheese salads, to vegetarian pizza, Buckwheat pancakes topped with Mexican beans, and excellent curry.
After a detoxifying two course meal, undo it all and sample one of Lancrigg’s freshly made desserts. Even the most die-hard health fanatics will find it hard to resist the traditional apple crumbles, chocolate Sundays and toffee puddings and selection of cheeses on offer here.
Step inside the picturesque white-fronted house and you’ll find refined and ornate Victorian period décor. Within the Green Valley Vegetarian Restaurant, floor to ceiling windows lend diners an impossibly stunning view of the fields outside, whilst a chandelier hangs overhead, casting a mellow ambience come sundown.
