Sat on Greyfriars Road in Cardiff, Barley and Rye is a stylish bar and restaurant that combines a fantastic range of drinks with an even better food offering. Barley and Rye's sublime Welsh dishes have been developed using only the best in locally sourced ingredients. The venue combines rustic decor complete with oak tables and bare brick walls with intimate lighting to create a relaxing ambience. Pair this with the standard of service, and you've got yourself a fine dining experience.
Perfect to whet the appetite before moving on to the main event are the Barley and Rye appetisers. The prawn and smoked salmon tower, served with a wacky yet wonderful Bloody Mary sorbet and a cucumber and horseradish gazpacho, and the Black Bomber cheddar crème brulee, make for just two of the exquisite starter plates.
Moving forward, diners could be excused for thinking that the best has been and gone, but that is certainly not the case. The mouth will certainly be watering at the mere sight of one of the main courses; the magnificent paupiette of crab stuffed plaice, the scrumptious pan-fried duck breast and the beet root tart tatin, another vegetarian delight, are all in full attendance. Coming straight from the grill, those with a more carnivorous craving are sure to be fully satisfied by the sumptuous steak, which comes in a 10oz portion or the more gluttonous 12oz.
With the idyllic Bute Park, the iconic Cardiff Castle and the legendary Cathays area all in close proximity, it can be expected that customers will be in a rush to get out and explore the spectacular surrounding area. However it seems a shame to not hang on for that little bit longer and sample one of the divine desserts at Barley and Rye. Visitors are invited to choose from a list that includes a heavenly white chocolate cheesecake, a marvellously soft toasted marshmallow, and the delectable and very traditional selection of Welsh cheeses.
