Situated on Kirkgate in the North Yorkshire market town of Ripon, Hot Lava provides locals and visitors to the area with an eclectic food selection that promises to delight one and all.

The stylish little eatery combines the contemporary with the rustic through bare brick walls, oak wood ceiling beams, plush leather seating and pristine wooden flooring which, combined with the superb service staff, makes for a tranquil setting in which to dine.

Specialising in American cuisine, the restaurant is able to offer an array of various dishes that are sure to excite any palate and satisfy any appetite. From their range of delectable chicken wings to the exquisite smoked salmon and mozzarella number, the diversity is there for all too see – and that’s before even getting past the appetite whetting starters.

Upon perusing the extensive main course list, diners could be forgiven for taking that extra little bit of time in choosing. There are an array of pizza and calzone choices, including the egg, spinach, ham and chorizo adorned Lava Supreme, and the rocket, olive and feta cheese topped Greek Passion, as well as a medley of pastas, such as the delicious spaghetti meatballs and the scrumptious chicken carbonara, that make up just a small portion of the menu.

An assortment of tender steak, burger and rib options are just perfect for the more carnivorous members of the party, whereas the divine whole seabass and the flavoursome grilled salmon steak are always there for the seafood lover. As for the meat averse, the mushroom based veggie burger and the mushroom and spinach spaghetti make for just two of the sublime vegetarian alternatives.

Be it for a quiet family gathering, a casual meal with the significant other, or a quick catch up with some close friends, Hot Lava is fit to cater for all.

Please note: The tastecard discount is not available on bank holidays or celebration days - including Valentines Day, Mothering Sunday, Father's Day, Christmas Eve and Christmas Day. The discount is also unavailable throughout December. You must book in advance and mention the tastecard to be entitled to the discount. The offer is always given subject to availability as the restaurant can be very busy.

    We booked this restaurant for Sunday evening and on arrival asked if they excepted the taste card. The waiter went to check with the management and we were informed that the taste card applied for Sunday dining. We chose two meals from the two course menu. After the second course I decided to have a desert which came from the three course menu. Having already asked if the taste card applied we were not informed that by using the three course menu for the desert that the taste card would no longer apply. When the bill arrived we were surprised to see that the full cost of both the two course menu and a three course menu had been included on the bill. When we questioned why the cheaper of the two starters and main courses have not been deducted from the bill as per the tastecard website we were informed that as we had had a sweet from the three course menu that the whole offer was not applicable. We explained to the staff that we had never had this issue before and according to the website the starter and main course for the cheaper meal should've been deducted and the sweet charged separately for price. We were informed that this was not the case at this restaurant. Reluctantly we excepted what we were told as we did not want to cause an scene in the restaurant and paid the bill in full. I'm leaving the restaurant we scrutinised the bill to find we have been overcharged by £18.90 because we should've had the cheaper meal removed of £12.95. Having checked the bill return to the restaurant and again questioned the total that we have paid. Again we were told that we were wrong and that the tastecard didn't apply as we have had a two course and a three course meal. I said that this was not explained to us by the waiting staff at any time and if it had been that we would have ordered the sweet. They then tried to tell us that the order had been taken by an inexperienced waiter who was still in training when in actual fact he had checked with management regarding the use of The taste card before we placed the order and when he took the order handed it to a female member of staff who entered the order into the computer/till. We also noted that we have been overcharged for a starter which should have formed part of one of the meals. We queried with the staff about what the tastecard actually covered and was told that only one taste card was allowed per table i.e.if four or six people dined together then only one taste card was permitted to be used instead of one for every two people as per the tastecard agreement. We explained that this was not how it worked and that a card applied to every two people who dined. The restaurant informed us that this was not how Hot Lava applied the tastecard. I then opened the tastecard app on my phone and showed the staff The terms and conditions of the taste card and those applicable to the restaurant. All the staff said was that they would bring this to the attention of the management. As a result of this experience I will certainly not be using this restaurant again or recommending it to anyone with a taste card. It has also left me with a poor impression of a taste card and the way restaurants are signed up to it and as a result of this I shall not be renewing my membership of the taste card next year. "
