Found on Olive Street in the city centre of Sunderland, Ali Baba is an unassuming Middle Eastern eatery that provides any fan of the cuisine with a host of appetising dishes.
This is extended to tastecard members, who are able to enjoy all of the tasty fare, all of which being halal, at a fantastic discount when they call in advance with their card.
Begin with one of the delectable starters, where a number of usual favourites can be found, such as the falafel and hummus, as well as an array of flavourful options that may not be as well known. Particularly tempting examples of such can be found in the mirza ghasemi, smoked aubergine with sautéed garlic, eggs and tomato, and the wondrous sharer that is Ali Baba’s house kebab, a skewer of each of their kebabs, served with rice and salad on top of a fresh naan bread.
Moving forward, the main course selection is just as scrumptious, with a variety of choices being available that are fit to suit any appetite. Especially merit worthy plates include the sumptuous whole grilled sea bass, which is marinated in olive and served in lemon juice, the lamb biryani, complete with cashew nuts, fried onions, almonds, sultanas, and a basmati rice, and the shish taouk, chicken marinated in Ali Baba’s special sauce.
Sat just a stone’s throw away from the Bridges Shopping Centre, the Sunderland Empire Theatre and the Sunderland Museum and Winter Gardens, Ali Baba acts as a fantastic stop off spot in which to enjoy a casual meal before a show, after a day of retail therapy, or amidst an afternoon of exploration.
Please note: The tastecard discount is not available on bank holidays.
