When phoned to book (as advised on Taste Card web site) The hotel said booking was not required, as usually very quiet! When we arrived for our Friday lunch, we found that the hotel was undergoing refurbishment (we not not told this on the phone). Lounge bar area was cold and pretty noisy, not the best of atmosphere for a quiet lunch. Nevertheless, we decided to give it a go. Food was the standard Thistle Chain menu which is pretty overpriced for lunch. We ordered haddock & chips at £12.95 & Chicken Skewers & Cous Cous also at £12.95. Would not normally have paid that price but as getting it for half price we went for it. Haddock was just of adequate size, but was nicely cooked and presented with mushy peas and tartare sauce. Not worth £12.95 though! 2 chicken skewers with 3 pieces of chicken on each with some veg and pile of cous cous, lettuce leaf & onion slices. Again adequate, but not worth the normal price £12.95 when in Inverness you can get a 2 course lunch at The Kitchen for £6.95 & Mustard Seed for £7.95 both excellent restaurants. We were also served by someone who did not know about the Tastecard and did not know how to apply the discount at then end when we asked for our bill. We were hanging about uncomfortably while a Manager was called! As the Thistle is a member of Tastecard, then surely they should train their staff up on how it works! Lounge bar is also getting refurbished in 3 weeks (really needs it as no warmth or atmosphere and very loose legs on chairs!) could be made really good as hotel is in a good location, pity about the standard Thistle menu though. To sum up, would not rush back, but okay for half price in you are in the area. Just wait til refurbishment works are complete!
