"We have often walked past Palace Spice and ignored it as just another newly sprung up curry house. But we decided to give it a go on a Wednesday night and we were really, really impressed.
Walking in we were greeted with a waft of incense; really evocative but not overpowering. The decor too was good- tasteful and modern without being tacky.
Sitting down we ordered poppadums and a bottle of wine. The wine was very reasonably priced at just under a tenner for a very acceptable red. The poppadums were excellent, having been clearly been cooked just there and then.
The dips as well were high quality, the onion again freshly chopped and the dips thick and tasty, not like the watering offerings provided by some lesser restaurants.
The food arrived on a heavy heated base to keep it warm. We had ordered a lamb dopiaza and a chefs special honey flavoured dish. Both were excellent; full of distinctive flavour, tasty and not oily or overpowering.
The honey dish was very interesting indeed as I’ve not tasted such a dish before- it worked well for me, though perhaps a hair too spicy. The only other minor thing was that the lamb was a little bit chewy, but then again that’s often what you get with lamb.
Our service was excellent and just the kind which I most appreciate. The staff were genuinely warm and friendly. They were efficient and responsive without being intrusive or hanging around- great stuff. Lastly, we were given a lovely Tia Maria digestif, on the house.
We had a great time. Though we were a little apprehensive of stepping in as we were the only ones there to begin with, the result was excellent. We will be back, busy or not. 9/10
