" I was a bit sceptical about Chimes after reading a couple of reviews about small portions. I have to say that for me and the 2 friends I treated to dinner the starter and mains were filling enough!

Whitby pudding was awesome! Had the poacher’s pie but next time I may try the fidget pie as it made my mate's face light up immensely.

The service was excellent, granted it wasn't a busy day but the staff seemed friendly and very approachable. Will definitely go again and recommend to friends! "

" We booked a month before and told them we had a tastecard -on arrival they had NO record of our booking but they did find us a table, brought us a menu, when we asked about the specials were told we couldn’t have them with a TC - so we ordered our meal - one of our party ordered the lamb shank it was a third of the size of the customers on the next table!!!! The vegetables portion that arrived (for 4 persons) was smaller than the table next to us (2 persons) and we found the staff quite rude with us.

We have had many TC meals and been very happy with them but on Saturday night we were treated as if we should not have been there. Definitely would not go back there. We are 4 pensioners and were on a weekend break to London. If Chimes treat their TC customers like this why do they bother accepting it!!!!! "

"Went with a couple of colleagues for drinks and dinner on a Friday evening a few weeks ago and we loved it. The food looked and tasted amazing. The place is unassuming and would easily pass by without noticing it, which is a shame but also means you can have a pleasant long evening. We were there from 17.30 till almost 23:00 and we never got hurried to leave even when the place started to fill up a bit. A gem of a find and will definitely visit again and recommend. Morgana "

"  05.08.10   I visited here with my partner last night.  I have to say the service there was excellent.  We sat by the open back door but were told that if it got too breezy they'll happily shut it, which they did. Food was ok, not the best I've ever had, but an interesting twist of traditional british cuisine.  I had prawns in white wine sauce over...a yorkshire pudding (yes, you did read that correctly!) and my partner had the baked brie, which he said he thought had been heated up in the microwave, but tasted alright enough. For mains we had the Steak and mushroom pie - huge pieces of steak but lacking a bit in the mushrooms, with delicious gravy - and the Poachers Pie - some bits of meat were a bit grissly.  These were served with veggies (2 new potatoes each, which I felt was a little stingy, but turned out it was the perfect amount, and cauliflower and carrots).  I had beer and my partner tried 2 different ciders.  Bill with taste discount came to a fraction over £30, which I guess is ok but had we paid full price then I would have been a bit upset.  The atmosphere there was great and it's certainly an interesting place - definitely worth a visit though!   Heather   "

"I used to visit Chimes quite regularly, when my Mum was living nearby and I absolutely love the place, so was delighted to see that it is included in the list of taste restaurants. The food is to die for and the Biddenden Sweet (cider) is absolutely heavenly!  Looking forward to heading back there, for my Mums birthday meal this weekend :-) Tracy "

"I have been to this place twice now and found it through taste. It is fast becoming one of my favourite places to have a good evening out with friends. I have tried various things on the menu, the liver and bacon is excellent and so is the shepherds pie - it's great to find good old fashioned English food that's well cooked with good ingredients. None of us have been disappointed with what we have ordered. The service is excellent as well, the staff are friendly and knowledgeable and are always helpful. The decor is lovely too. Though if your sat in the back and there is a party table in the noise travels and you struggle to hear your partner. Overall a first rate restaurant and highly recommend it. Mike Drury "

"Me and my girlfriends went there for a good dinner and catch up hoping to save some money with my taste card. The dinner was ok, the Steak and Mushroom Pie was very tasty if a little small, described as "comes with new potatoes" actually came with only 2 tiny new potatoes, barely a portion for a child. The Lamb Shank looked tasty, another small portion. The garlic bread starter was chewy and tasted a little like it was made 2 days ago. The dessert was bizarre, Lemon meringue pie had foamy egg instead of cooked meringue with a base that tasted like custard and cream that tasted off. On the plus side the wine was lovely, staff friendly and decor charming. All in all, a lovely pokey little restaurant for a nice glass of wine, but the food is very overpriced for what it is, even with our taste saving. Sal "

"Nice place for a British Meal. May look like a pub but a really down to Earth place wit ha good selection of beers and ciders. A lot in the menu was pie based and the mains are quite small... but more than enough to fill you up. I shared the grilled brie starter which was nicely done and had the cod and haddock open pie which was perfect.   For the foodies among you, be warned that you may not be able to order the Sirloin medium rare or the tuna pink... but it is worth asking. "Went here as had some friends visiting from overseas who wanted to taste something with a British feel. Arrived on a freezing Sunday night in December to be the only table in there, but that soon changed as tables quickly started filling up! Recommend the poachers pie various game in a lovely orange and port sauce and my friends loved their roast beef dinners. Desserts fall into the comfort food mode and def the thing to warm you up-try the bread and butter pudding. Worth a visit and good selection of cider and some very sweet fruit wines. Roberta Gordon "

"Chimes was an interesting mix - The first place I used the taste card. The decor is like a mix of shambolic hidden local boozer and junior school dining hall. The drink was fantastic, great choice of cider and very good house wine. The food was almost all good. Very nice pate, excellent lamb shank and haddock/cider pie (only complaint was that it was all served on crockery that looked like it had been lifted from the same school hall as the table and chairs). The only let down was the prawns in white wine sauced served in a yorkshire pudding which sounded like it wouldn't work and didn't. Overall I really enjoyed it - very quirky, very English and very good value. David "

"Because I'm six foot five I found the tables and chairs (clearly nicked from a chapel) rather too small to be comfortable. Staff very friendly. Food not really up to much, large portions but clearly nothing was made on site - prices appropriate to a good restaurant but food appropriate to an average pub. Wine good and good value. "The cost/benefit is excellent: without being expensive, the reasturant offers good food with a very quick and polite service. Furnishing and decoration are essential but elegant and relaxing, so is the low volume music. It is exactly "the place to take friends from overseas", which is what I do. Special mention for the Lamb Shank. Carlo "
