We came here to celebrate my son achieving his Gold DofE award, and presentation at James's Palace, so we wanted a really good lunch somewhere iconic to make the day. I booked the table about a month previously and told the that I'd be using my Tastecard. So, we arrived and were, I have to say, treated like royalty! The table was set for 3, and we were ready to go.
I ordered the pork belly for starters, as did my wife. Son ordered scallops. We also ordered a bottle of the Wicked Lady wine, as my wife and son prefer a sweeter wine. A bit too sweet for me, so I saved my glass until pudding.
The belly pork was superb. Crispy crackling, some fat and juicy meat, my wife and I agreed it was excellent, and about the right size for a starter. My son ordered the scallops and when they were served, 3 scallops did seem a bit on the mean side, but wait for the rest of the review folks!
A word of warning. If you want fast food, you ain't getting it here! The service is dignified, and you get a decent amount of time to digest your food before the next course arrives. We liked that, but if you're in a hurry, you might need to mention that.
Another thing we liked was we were also offer water, and the offer was tap, bottled or sparkling. We opted for tap, but it's nice to be offered without having to specify it.
Next course... Main.
I had the bouef bourguignon, Mrs S had the duck as did my son. The bouef bourguignon comes with a huge bowl of horseradish mash, and I struggled to finish it. In fact, I didn't. Son ordered a bowl of chive mash to go with the duck, and Mrs S had thyme roasted new potatoes. We all agreed that it was beautifully cooked and served. It was lovely and hot, and we were not rushed at all. And no bloody hovering waiters either!!!
And so to pud. I had the cheeseboard, as did my son. I'll take a moment to say to all other restaurants here... THIS IS WHAT A CHEESEBOARD SHOULD LOOK LIKE. LOTS OF DIFFERENT (5) CHEESES, AND ENOUGH CRACKERS TO ENJOY THEM WITH. IT IS THE BEST CHEESEBOARD I'VE HAD.
Wife had Créme Brûleé, which she told me was lovely.
Now we are all full. However...
Along comes Mikhail, (I hope I spent that correctly) who remembers taking my original booking. We have a little chat about the very cute Tower Bridge shaped serving cake stands they had, and then he brings us a plate full of delicious cakes. No charge!
Am I full? Oh yes! Was the food lovely? Absolutely. Was the venue nice? Superb. Probably the best view in London. And how was the service, Jonny boy? Fantastic.
We are saving up to go again. But for £117.00 for 3, with wine, in a venue like this, it's a deal, it's a steal... You know the rest.
Thanks to all of the staff. You really made our day.
