2 for 1 at The Merryfellow

Sat on School Road in the Charlton Kings area of Cheltenham, just a stone’s throw away from the spectacular Cotswolds Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, is the Merryfellow.

A traditional British pub that offers up all the charm expected of such, The Merryfellow invites one and all to partake in some delectable fare in a relaxed environment that is ideal for spending quality time with loved ones.

This warm welcome is extended to tastecard members, who can enjoy all that is served on their a la carte menu at a superb price when they call in advance and produce their card upon arrival, leaving plenty in the pocket for a beverage or two from the extensive drinks menu.

Beginning with one of the gratifying appetisers, from a list that includes a scrumptious collection of salt & pepper calamari, some Halloumi chips with a tomato & chilli sauce and a rich homemade pate, diners can consider their appetite thoroughly whetted for what’s to come.

Next up, the mouth-watering mains available at The Merryfellow leave little to be desired, with a wealth of delightful options available for all that care to partake. Particularly enticing examples of such can be seen in the tantalising full rack of ribs, adorned with a spicy Jack Daniels glaze and accompanied by chips, homemade coleslaw and onion rings, a flavoursome goats cheese tart, paired with a fresh green salad, and the quintessentially British beer battered haddock, chips & mushy peas combo.

Whether it’s for a casual evening out with the significant other, a catch up with an old friend, a celebration with a loved one, or a bit of respite amidst a day of activity, all are catered for at the Merryfellow Inn.

This is a very pleasant pub with its own parking adjacent.

Whilst there is a separate restaurant, on the Wednesday evening we visited it was empty, so we decided to eat in the bar which was nicely populated with four other diners and a small number of drinkers. The tables are not on top of each other with the bar area and adjoining areas having an agreeable and congenial feel.

Upon our arrival we were served drinks at the bar and directed to our table by a pleasant young lady. After a short while menus arrived, and our orders were taken a little time later.

The menu choices are fairly varied with a burger section, a selection of starters, mains and dessert together with a specials board – all of which are available to Tastecard customers. When we visited (April 2018) Wednesday nights was a special burger promotional evening (burger and a pint £10) – this is not available with Tastecard.

On this occasion we went for the home-made pies. The interval between ordering and receiving our food was consistent with the food being freshly prepared – so a little bit of a wait which was well worth it.

Our dinners were served by a different member of staff who was also very pleasant and conscientious, asked if we required further drinks (which we did) and then left us to it.
The pies were of excellent quality, with crisp pastry, packed with filling, were obviously homemade and tasted superb.

Both were served with chunky chips, peas and gravy (in a separate jug). The chips were cooked to perfection (to my taste anyway) – beautifully golden, crisp on the outside and fluffy in the centre. Quite often these types of chips give me indigestion but not these – well done whoever cooked them.

Our empty plates were cleared away promptly and we were offered desserts. Having enjoyed our meal and drinks we decided against – although there were several tempting options on offer.

After paying at the bar a visit to the toilets was in order which I am very happy to report were well maintained, clean with a very good, powerful hot air hand dryer (I can’t bear the ones where it feels like a gnat is “blowing” on your hand).

In summary, it was worth the 35-minute drive each way and I cannot think of any reason why we wouldn’t return during the summer – even if it’s just to try the pie again. "

The variety of choice and quality of food was amazing. The prices were very reasonable too.
A bill of £85 for 6 people with drinks, mains, sides and 2 desserts is amazing and that was without the discount! "
