We were visiting Harrogate and the reviews of Banyan seemed promising. I phoned to ask if we could book a table for two on a Sunday night at 8pm. There was a little hestitancy accepting our Tastecard usage as they required two hours notice, it was past 6pm as I rang, but they relented.
Upon arrival Banyan was not busy. I would say 6 or 7 diners. We spoke to a bar tender who seemed confused and had to ask someone else about booked guests... he worked the bar and it was like a different realm of the business. He came back and pointed us to a table we should sit at.
So we sat and waited to be served at our table. No one came for 15 minutes. One waitress was dealing with a customer complaint about their meal. We were left sitting without menus, without drinks, without eye contact or acknowledgment. We stood up and slowly put our coats on and trundled out. No one even noticed us leaving.
Lessons. It wasn't busy but new customers were made to feel like a burden to the skeleton crew staff. No one took responsibility for giving us any clue what we should be doing. We sat like lemons hoping to be of interest to someone who wanted our custom. We left as invisibly as we sat there. Bleak times at Banyan indeed. "

" My wife and I had reserved a table at Banyan having read good reviews. We were not disappointed. Being a 'bar'/restaurant we didn't have the same expectation level as of a 'fine dining' restaurant. The ambience/atmosphere was pretty much as one would expect so no criticism and even though we ate early prior to visiting the theatre there were quite a number of patrons, a good number of whom were dining which we took as a good sign.

I had downloaded a menu prior to leaving home so we knew what type of food selection to expect which is always a good thing to do, especially if anyone is, shall I say "particular" about their food/

To start my wife had the Goats' cheese bruschetta which, if I'm honest, could have been presented less ostentatiously but sold more cheaply whereas I had the panko battered king prawns (5 of) which were really good and represented good value. We followed the starters with a pie each, my wife having the chicken and ham hock (pie of the day) whilst I had the steak and ale, both served with great chips and an assortment of seasonal greens cooked perfectly. For afters my wife had the trio of ice creams (pistachio, strawberries & cream and honeycomb) which were good quality and I had the "strawberry and apple crumble" but, instead of a piece cut from a large version I received 6 individual small tartlets served on a slate bed which was very pretty presentation but I transferred these into a dish so that the cream wouldn't run away.

We had a ' Mullygrubber' Australian Shiraz/Cabernet Sauvignon which was very good and priced about right for a town centre eatery (drinks prices generally have increased in recent years - disproportionately in my opinion).

I must make special mention of our waitress 'Hannah' who was knowledgeable, amiable without being familiar and very professional.

I would recommend the Banyan to discerning diners but probably not if you were looking for somewhere to dine for a 'special' occasion. If in Harrogate again I would have no hesitation to go again. "
