Food trend 2019: What’s banana blossom?

July 11th, 2019

By Melissa McPhillips

We’ve all well and truly jumped onto that jackfruit bandwagon, throwing it in every burger and taco and onto every pizza we can. But there’s a new meat-substitute in town. And it’s called banana blossom.

Wondering what on earth the delicately named ingredient is? This should answer all your questions…

Where does banana blossom grow?

The clue’s in the name: banana blossoms grow on banana trees. So, they grow where bananas grow in places like Africa, Latin America, the Caribbean and the Pacific. Ever spotted that bud-shaped, dark purplish-brown thing sprouting at the end of a bunch of bananas? That’s a banana blossom. And if you leave them, they’ll eventually grow into bananas.

What does it taste like?

Banana blossom has a subtle fruity, nutty flavour to it. But it’s also pretty neutral, so it’s the ideal base ingredient to cook with.

Is banana blossom like jackfruit?

In terms of being a vegan favourite and making its way into tons of dishes, yes. But banana blossom has a whole different job on its hands. It’s got a flakier texture, so it’s usually used as a fish-substitute rather than meat.

What can I cook with banana blossom?

It can be eaten raw or cooked but most people use it in salads, curries, stir-fries, soups or dumplings. And thanks to its flesh-like, stringy texture, it soaks up a lot of seasoning. So, you can make your dishes as flavourful or as plain as you fancy. A lot of restaurants are starting to deep-fry it too to create vegan-friendly fish ’n’ chips. Want to give it a go yourself? It’s sold in a can in your local supermarket.

Where can I try it with tastecard?

You’re in luck, because Chiquito have just launched a new vegan menu and the ingredient of the moment, banana blossom, makes an appearance. Twice. Featured in a burger served with slaw, greens and Violife vegan cheese as well as a starter, the Mexican restaurant have the 2019 food trend ticked off.
