Montaz is a small chain of Indian restaurants across the south east of England. Montaz Newmarket is a relatively new addition to the group which has been serving high quality cuisine since the 1980s. However, with a stylish and contemporary interior, some innovative Indian food and a very friendly welcome, Montaz Newmarket has already built up a great reputation among locals and visitors alike. All of the restaurants in the Montaz chain are run independently which means each head chef has the creative freedom to make their menu their own. The dishes on offer at Montaz Newmarket are a mix of well-loved favourites and some more unusual but equally tasty options. For diners who want to venture away from their standard korma or rogan josh, there are lots of exciting options to choose from. To start, there's the tandoori batera, quails marinated with traditional herbs and spices before being cooked in the clay oven. Highlights of the main meals include Afghani lamb chops, roasted in the tandoor with garlic, ginger, green chilli and caramelised onions, a lamb shank slow cooked in the chef's secret sauce and the harin mansh, venison marinated in fresh herbs and spices and served with asparagus. There's also always a signature dish of the day and an excellent range of vegetarian options. Diners can choose from beers, wines, spirits and soft drinks to accompany their meal. The wine list is very good and includes a few expensive bottles of champagne for anyone whose luck came in at the races. Newmarket Racecourse is a short drive away from Montaz restaurant. Newmarket rail station is within walking distance as are the town's main shopping streets. For diners who are planning a day at the races or just locals looking for a mid-week treat.
