Petworth, Swan House Cellars, Market Square
Petworth, the historic village in the Sussex countryside is the setting for this unique restaurant. Located in the former wine cellars of Swan house, a 13th Century Hotel, the restaurant has an ambience which is difficult to find elsewhere. The low key entrance leads down to a minimally designed restaurant space with white arched walls and low ceilings. Before being a wine cellar, the restaurant rooms where part of a tunnel network running below the streets of Petworth some even leading to the great Petworth house. There were even shops located in the tunnels. As you look around the cellar, there are visible signs when the rooms where once used as dungeons to hold prisoners. Overcoming many obstacles and meeting a tight deadline, the restaurant was opened in the winter of 2005 in time for the festive season and was an immediate success. The restaurant has maintained a steady position in the market with high levels of service and standard of cuisine. Executive Chef Nasar Miah was bought in to the group as a whole, to direct the menu in a back to basics style of cooking and introduce some home cooked dishes. The a la carte menu at Basmati Restaurants cover a wide area of the Asian sub-continent, including India, Pakistan and Bangladesh. The menu hosts the traditional range of Indo-Asian restaurant cuisine as well as unique home style Bangladeshi and Indian dishes. The chefs signature dishes are only available at Basmati Restaurants, and nowhere else in the UK.
