“Marty Supreme is an intense, energetic two-and-a-half-hour film following Timothée Chalamet’s character, Marty Mauser - a wannabe table tennis hero in 1950s America. No spoilers, but Marty is… deeply unlikeable. It’s slightly odd to find yourself so invested in a film when you’re struggling to connect with the human side of its protagonist.
That said, Chalamet does a phenomenal job portraying Marty and fully deserves the acclaim he’s picking up during awards season. Despite the character challenges, the film flies by and keeps you thoroughly engaged.
The supporting cast is also fantastic. Marty’s on-off girlfriend Rachel is perfectly portrayed by Odessa A’zion, while Gwyneth Paltrow shines as washed-up actress Kay, alongside her wealthy businessman husband, Mr Rockwell — just a few of the standouts.
This isn’t really a film about ping pong, so go in with an open mind - and if you can, treat yourself to a trip to your local cinema to watch this one.”
If you’re looking for a film that’s bold, energetic and a little unexpected, Marty Supreme is well worth your time. It’s the kind of cinema trip that reminds us why a night out - popcorn, big screen and all - never goes out of style.
